Charles de Lastic
I have spent the last 21 years actively goal setting to improve my effectiveness in all areas of my life. I spend a lot of time reading books on business and personal development. In fact, I have read over 40 books a year almost every year for the past 23 years. (some more than once). I then seek to implement the best ideas that I learn into my businesses and life.
I currently work as the MD of 3 separate companies.
One financial services company
One business coaching company
One property services company
I have run my own business for over 30 years. By reading hundreds of books and attending a lot of courses, I have been researching, testing and implementing business effectiveness strategies for over 30 years. Over the years, I have helped and coached many clients who are business owners to improve their lives and business profitability.
Around 20 years ago a very successful financial adviser suggested I join a “goal cultivation” group course (setting medium-term goals and holding each other to account by meeting every three months). Those three years turned out to be one of the most “successful” periods of my life as I achieved a lot and really moved my business forward. This taught me the immense power of being held accountable in a team and also inspired me to read hundreds of business and personal development books.
These books together with attending many business courses, helped me to envision a whole new possibility for my life. I am no longer driven by just making money but more I am working on moving my life purpose forward every day.
I love helping and coaching people as I believe that how you think drives your actions and habits and thus shapes your life. I also wanted to give something back to all the writers and coaches who have helped me by “passing it on”. Vitality Business Coaching is the result of this desire to make a positive difference and help people as best I can.
Personal development – This interest has made an enormous difference in my life, and I continue to read a lot of books on the subject to help myself develop further. I am currently engaged in a personal development coaching program myself to stay on the cutting edge of this field.
Health and fitness – My target is to live a long, happy and healthy life. I am fascinated by the science around longevity and health. The game I play or “sport” I practice I have named “Being a kick-arse 100-year-old”. The question is, what do you need to do to win this particular game?
Study and research – I spend a lot of time attending courses, watching videos and documentaries and reading books on business and personal development. In fact, I have read over 40 books a year almost every year for the past 23 years. (some more than once). I then seek to implement the ideas that I learn into my businesses and life.
Recreation – I love downhill skiing, any form of sea-based water sport, especially kite surfing, take lots of interesting holidays and enjoy time with family and friends. Don’t hold it against me, but I am an avid Chelsea fan.
My Purpose statement – I inspire, help and coach people to live happier more effective lives.
I use this purpose statement to help ensure I make the right decisions and take the right actions.
Putting it up here encourages me and everyone I engage with to hold me accountable for this statement. It took a while for me to pluck up the courage to place such a bold statement on this and other websites, but now it’s done it pushes me to achieve my purpose.
- Why inspire? – It reminds me to set and achieve high standards
- Why help? – It reminds me to be active and “hands–on.”
- Why coach? – It’s effective in helping people to succeed
- Why happier? – It’s a fundamental driver for everyone
- Why effective? – Being effective produces great results.
My name is Charles de Lastic, and at the time of updating this in 2019, I am 63 years old. I live in the sleepy village of Wheathampstead in Hertfordshire, England, with my wife and long-term partner of 24 years Heather. Heather and I met at Salsa dancing classes, and she is, without a doubt, one of the most organised people in the world – we make a great team. Our daughter, Kirsten, is a primary school teacher who lives with her boyfriend Sam who is a PE teacher.
My father died when I was very young. My mother Rita (89 this year) is living on the Gold Coast in Australia and still playing a lot of golf. My two brothers – Robert lives in Australia in the same town as my mother, and Peter lives in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
At age 18, I started work in the equities department for the Queens Bank Coutts and Co in the city of London. After a few years, I decided I preferred working more with people and joined Sainsbury’s, rising to become a deputy store manager. This role gave me a solid foundation in business operations, systems and team management.
I “semi-retired at 31” to run my own business – a bar and restaurant on the Greek island of Lefkas. For seven years most of my summer days were spent windsurfing and evenings working in the bar. In the winters I indulged my passion for skiing and worked as a holiday rep in the French Alps for Thomsons and Inghams.
Eventually, I decided I was getting a bit long in the tooth for that hedonistic lifestyle, so I returned to the UK and trained to become a financial adviser with Lloyds Bank and then Barclays Bank. At Barclays, I worked mainly with business owners as clients.
I have a separate consultancy business as a specialist in Inheritance Tax and Estate planning. We help the wealthy retired, investment property owners and business owners with their tax planning.
Barring accidents, I fully expect to live to be 100 plus (fingers crossed) as I take very good care of myself. I am almost obsessive about my health and vitality. I pay very close attention to my diet, exercise and sleep and I don’t drink alcohol (no more than one or two small bottles of beer a month) – however, I don’t let that slow me down at parties.
I have ten years’ proven experience of coaching individuals overcoming barriers and shifting their mindset to help them achieve their goals. I have helped clients with a range of issues from traumatic life events to simply wanting to see their world in a more positive light. I have a BSc (Hons) in Psychology, and I am a certified Master Practitioner of Neuro–Linguistic Programming, Time Line Therapy and Hypnosis and a Master NLP Coach.
Work–life balance is always a common theme that arises when working with individual clients. Work is such a huge part of our waking hours, and I believe this needs to be seen as part of our lives, not something in conflict with “life”. If we can feel happy and confident in our workplace, this helps us to achieve happiness in all the other areas of life that fall outside of work. I have been amazed at the number of clients that are clearly disengaged in their work and I have always wondered what the impact of this is on the business they work for.
I am passionate about helping business directors not only increase profitability but also create a happy and motivated workforce. I believe that the right mindset is essential in achieving this. I work closely with Directors and Business Owners to ensure their mindset is aligned with their vision and goals, not only within their business but also in their personal lives.
I firmly believe we are all doing the best with the resources we have available, and I am passionate about learning and growing to ensure I have a strong set of resources in all areas of my life. This involves personal development, health and fitness, and spending time recharging my batteries with close friends and family. Building these resources helps me invest in my three biggest passions – my sons! I strive each day to learn and grow so that I can set the best possible example to them.
I have always had a fascination with understanding how people think and how this drives behaviour. How can two people view the same event and have a totally different response to it?
This intrigue led me to study Psychology at university, and I graduated with a desire to continuously study and learn about the human mind and behaviour.
On graduation, I embarked on a career in HR where I became particularly interested in all aspects of people’s behaviour and how this impacts not only on their performance but also on their colleagues and leaders and performance.
I was working long hours and putting a lot of pressure on myself, which eventually caused me to reach ‘burn-out’ at the ripe old age of 24! This was a challenging time which led me to look further into the field of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP).
Essentially, NLP allows you to look at ‘how’ you think and implements new ways of thinking that help you achieve more positive behaviour and results. I began regular coaching sessions with a wonderful lady who was a Master Practitioner of NLP. She challenged the way I thought and viewed my world, and I had the cliché lightbulb moment! My whole mindset shifted to a place where I was back in control of my thoughts and behaviour.
The impact on my life was huge, and so I decided to train as a Practitioner of NLP, Timeline Therapy and Hypnosis and then subsequently expand on my skills as a Master Practitioner 10 years ago. The skills that I learnt were valuable in so many different areas of life. Working within the HR function of a London based law firm, I could see just how much employees at all levels could benefit from these skills and consequently have a significant impact on the success and profitability of the business.
I left my career in HR to focus my time on starting and raising my young family. Having three boys in four years really put my NLP skills to the test!! My passion for NLP continued, and I began my coaching business by coaching individuals. I was amazed at just how many clients I was seeing that were struggling with certain issues that were either driven by their work–life or having a significant impact on their performance at work.
I firmly believe that everyone can benefit from the tools and techniques that NLP teach and the scope for the use of these tools and techniques within the workplace is huge.
I am also a qualified hypnobirthing teacher and have used the techniques to birth my three sons without any pain relief – all of which were over 11lbs!
